Sunrise School offers comprehensive special education day school programs for students, ages 5 through 22, with moderate to severe global delays associated with autism spectrum disorder and other developmental disabilities. The primary goal is to enable each student to realize his or her fullest potential in the areas of independence and skill level across all academic areas.

With a multidisciplinary team of professionals, Sunrise provides a wide range of learning opportunities that foster growth in all essential areas. Program Features:

  • Individualized academic programs, which include functional reading, functional writing, functional math, self-help, vocational and community awareness and safety.
  • Speech and Language and Occupational Therapy services are available as per students’ IEP. All providers work closely with the teachers in a collaborative model to support students’ learning experience in the full breadth of school activities.

Curriculum

Sunrise School teaches functional life skills in the areas of reading, language arts, math, health, social skills, self-help, vocational and community awareness and safety. The alternate Unique curriculum provides differentiated instruction that is standards-aligned content enhanced by powerful assessments, data tools and evidence-based instructional support. Students from pre K through transition have the advantage of consistent high-quality instruction, a motivating interactive learning environment, engaging symbol support and a path to independence. The classroom environment is structured using the methodology of Teaching and Educating Autistic and Communicatively Handicapped Children (TEACCH). The approach to instruction follows the Individualized Critical Skills Model, as well as the Special Education Alternate Curriculum Guide for students with moderate to severe disabilities. The content areas addressed are adapted from the framework geared for general education grade levels.

All students participate in the community-based instruction program that provides opportunities to generalize independent living skills taught in the classroom to real-life experiences such as purchasing items, money management, taking public transportation and practicing communication skills with community members.

A fully equipped vocational skills lab provides authentic work experiences for elementary to transition-aged students. Students prepare for future employment opportunities by learning pre-vocational skills such as following directions, practicing social skills and performing clerical, office and delivery tasks.
The Student Garden is a peaceful outdoor space that that offers a bounty of educational experiences to enhance the curriculum in the areas of science, health, agriculture, safety and communication.
The Fitness Center provides the opportunity for students to have a daily exercise routine. The treadmill, stationary bicycle and rowing machine allow students to develop their gross motor skills in a safe environment that promotes cardio activity and physical fitness.

Social skills instruction is taught and modeled throughout the school day and reinforced through a rich student life that includes art and music programs, campus-wide events such as a Science Fair and Spirit Weeks. School socials, dances, the Sunrise Prom and holiday celebrations provide additional opportunities for Sunrise students to interact socially in age-typical events in an atmosphere that is safe and nurturing. Community Based Instruction is provided on a weekly basis to facilitate the generalization of skills learned at school to real life settings.

Sunrise Educational Support Systems

Speech and Language services are provided by licensed speech and language pathologists as per students’ Individualized Education Programs (IEP). Communication is solicited and facilitated throughout the day by all teachers and support staff. Providers also work closely with teachers in a collaborative model in the classroom setting.

Sunrise School’s classes are designed to meet the needs of students with limited language. Through the use of tools such as the Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS), Augmentative Alternative Communication devices and iPad tablets, students develop the ability to express their wants and needs.

Technology is provided to support individual needs in various ways. Students are given opportunities to actively explore the web-based curriculum using technology such as iPads, interactive white boards, computers, adaptive keyboards and speech-generating devices. The Vocational Lab is equipped with computers where students may practice their keyboarding and data entry skills.

The philosophy of Sunrise School is to provide every student with school-wide, classroom and individual positive behavioral support. This tiered behavioral program creates a predictable environment through which each student can improve his or her personal, health, social, family, vocational, and recreational quality of life. Methods used include Applied Behavior Analysis, Discrete Trial Training, Behavior Intervention Development, Behavior Intervention Implementation, and Pivotal Response Treatment. The school BCBA is directly involved in the development and oversight of every student’s behavior support plan.
